When you are going through a typical day how many times do you think I’d rather be somewhere else? When you think that, where is it you’d rather be? When you’ve used a camera for years, you really start to notice your surroundings, more specifically you notice small changes in your surroundings. You notice people, you make eye contact and smile, you stop and converse with people. Every so often you will notice a person in a contemplative moment. A few seconds in the day where they are out with their surroundings and far a way in another place of their choosing.
An artist I admire is Edouard Manet, I often think that if he were Alive now he’d use a camera as well as a paint brush. “The bar at the Folies Bergere” is a painting I keep coming back to. Every time I look at it I think the woman behind the bar is thinking something different. It’s a work that demands repeated viewing, every time you notice another detail. Manet was a Flaneur and painter of life and the street. So next time you’re walking down the street with your camera be aware of your surroundings and the people you could meet.
