Fujifilm-23mm-f2-Graded-Jan-2107-2

Last Year I wrote a post about the Prime lens trios offered by Fujifilm and the alternatives that I use. Since then I have changed my trio slightly (well 2/3s of it). First of all here’s the original table I used.

My Trio

23mm F2 WR (35mm)

23mm F1.4 (35mm)

18mm F2 (28mm)

35mm F2 WR (50mm)

35mm F1.4 (50mm)

27mm F2.8 (40mm)

50mm F2 WR (75mm)

56mm F1.2 (85mm)

60mm F2.4 (90mm)

Now I’m primarily a Street shooter, although I dislike that tag, it roughly describes my shooting style. I prefer the term Documentary Photographer but this post isn’t about Semantics. With that in mind, the focal range I tend to focus on is 28mm-40mm (35mm equivalent). This explains my initial choice of the 27mm F2.8 pancake lens. I still own this lens, it’s light, small and does the job. It’s an older lens in terms of Fujifilm offerings, but is still very usable. I always carried the 18mm F2 with me for occasions when I wanted to push perspective a bit but would use it maybe 10% of the time. I’m a firm believer in one camera/ one lens and mastering that.

My main issue with the 27mm was that it was a bit too tight on the streets, and the 18mm was a bit wide. The obvious solution was the 23mm F2 which I purchased a few weeks ago. It’s now my primary lens, as I’ve found the focal length a better fit for City Centre shots. No real surprise there, but compared to the 27mm pancake the lens really is a step up. The lens is all metal construction like its 35mm brother. It has an aperture ring, and is Weather Resistant, which paired with my X-T1 is very useful in Scotland. The lens renders beautifully and is tack sharp.

I don’t work on sports or wildlife so Auto-Focus isn’t a massive deal for me. But wow, this lens is way faster than my previous two. My hit rate is much higher than the 27mm, I think this is their fastest AF lens now so that’s an added bonus for me. So all positives so far… pretty much, one negative I’d like it smaller! A lot to ask ,I know but I love pancake lenses, they are so much more versatile and make camera bodies more pocketable. You can also get then under your jacket if it rains. But bottom line, you can’t have everything! So here’s the new list.

No I haven’t sold the 27mm pancake lens it’s on my back up X-T10 body. It’s almost like a body cap and gives a small pocketable set up. Oh and yes the 35mm has snuck in there, It’s smaller than the 23mm F2 and has the benefits stated above, they can also share the nifty new lens hood that comes with the 23mm. It’s a nice loose portrait lens and fits in your pocket. (Remember, Always Carry A Camera.

Finally why not just go the whole hog and get the 50mm F2 WR. Well I thought about it, but couldn’t part with the 60mm F2.4, I love that lens. The focal is perfect for portraits and as a bonus it’s a macro. Why not both, well two lenses are plenty, I don’t really need three, never mind four.
